New Research Shows the Need for Abstinence
Washington, DC -- Twenty percent of 12- to 14-year-olds have had
sexual intercourse, according to a study by the National Campaign
to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. Parental neglect is cited as the main
reason why the numbers are so high. Bill Albert, of the campaign, said parents need to pay attention.
"I think it really is a wakeup call to parents, for those who
thought they could kind of talk about sex, love and relationships
once their kids get into high school," Albert said. "What we want
to tell young people is that abstinence is your first choice, it
is your best choice."
In fact, abstinence-only education is proving to be the most
effective message we can give to our kids, according to Leslee
Unruh, of the Abstinence Clearinghouse.
"We have a real problem," Unruh said. "We have been selling
raging hormones to everyone. These are not animals. These are
young people that have willpower."
Unruh said sexually active teens have a 70 percent success rate
at stopping sexual behavior when presented with the
abstinence-only message. Since the government endorsed abstinence
education, teen sex has seen a sharp decline.
