On Saturday,
September, 2006 , approximately 900 individuals were honored to hear from one of
our country's brightest conservative leaders, Phyllis Schlafly, President of
Eagle Forum. Phyllis in her typical style began "teaching" the audience about
what our country has become and where we are headed unless we become involved
and engaged.
Her warning of running amuck judges was stunning. She made it evident that
electing the appropriate individuals, who will therefore appoint judges who
interpret rather than make law, is what we must always strive for. She also
gave stark warnings about a country who allows itself to lose its own heritage.
America is an amazing country made up of millions of individuals, from hundreds
of countries, who have until recently assimilated into this one wonderful
melting pot known as America. But recently, in the name of compassion, we have
become a welfare state for people from thousands of countries. This attitude
has threatened our heritage, our economy, and our very way of life.
Mrs. Schlafly also challenged everyone in attendance to challenge the 2008
presidential candidates on our issues. She acknowledged that Iowa was in a
unique position and that our questions and our persistence in demanding that
issues of importance to people of faith were being discussed could make a large
difference in the outcome of the next Presidental election.
Iowa Christian
Alliance's Friends of the Family Awards Banquet was the largest gathering of
pro-family activists in 2006. Attendees enjoyed good food and good
conversation. Kayne Robinson, Executive Director of the National Rifle
Association, entertained the crowd in his role as Master of Ceremonies. In
addition to Schlafly's "call to action," Congressmen Latham, Nussle and King
addressed the crowd. Jeff Lamberti, candidate for Congress in Iowa's Third
Congressional District, also spoke.
Several organizations/businesses/candidates had literature tables for people to
enjoy. Dr. Dawn Pawlewski Krogh
thrilled the
crowd with her singing.
Steve Scheffler presented the Alliance's Annual Awards. Marilyn Bose of
Estherville was awarded the Ione Dilley 2006 Award. Lynn Proudfoot and Joyce
Farrington were given the 2006 Friend of the Family Awards. In addition, Maizie
Lord was given the other 2006 Friend of the Family Award, awarded posthumously
on behalf of her husband, the late Sen. David Lord. All of these awards were
given to these individuals because of their relentless work on behalf of Iowa's
traditional families. Congratulations!!
