Senator Paul McKinley issued the following statement
on the ruling:
"I am surprised that Judge Hanson granted this
summary judgement dismissing the case without
hearing testimony from expert witnesses. This ruling
is a disservice to Iowans and Iowa traditions as we
like to hear all sides before a decision is made. I
truly hope that Judge Hanson did not have a
predetermined or biased opinion on this volatile
issue."
"During the previous debate with Democrats on a
constitutional amendment declaring marriage as a
union of a man and a woman, many Democrats argued
that a constitutional amendment was unnecessary
because the Iowa law already took care of the issue.
Most Republicans believed a constitutional amendment
was necessary because all it takes is one person in
a black robe to declare the law invalid. Yesterday,
our concerns were validated."
